How to convert a Parallels Desktop VM to VMware Fusion VM (Windows only)

This method requires a samba (SMB) network share, maybe the local one (bundled with Mac OS X) or a preexistent network share ( the good fucking NAS you have inside your dirty rack :) ).

First of all start your parallels virtual machine running Windows…
Then download VMware Converter from http://www.vmware.com/download/converter/, install it and get it running :)

You will be asked for a licence but you can use the Starter Mode.

Let’s start clicking on Import Machine

We have to select the following ones:

  • Physical computer
  • This local machine
  • Ignore page file and hybernation
  • VMWare standalone virtual machine

Now please select the name and the path for the VM, setting this one to the network share .

After a while, a long while, shutdown the parallels VM, open up VMware Fusion and open the vmx file we have just created.
You will get a missing floppy drive error and a bunch of new hardware detected nags… let it works and be patient.

After another while you will be happy ;)
